"Getting to the Enjoyment"
(Webmaster's Note: This is Jeanne's last President's Message.  As you know she is stepping down after fulfilling her two year obligation on the Executive Board.  You may not realize it, but she made it her mission to submit a President's Message every month of her time in office (except the Summer months) and she was true to her word.  If you'll visit the Archive News you will see that there was very little news prior to her tenure.  Please take a minute to send her an e-mail thanking her for a tremendous job.  Just click on this link:  Send an e-mail to Jeanne.)

Hasn't this been a marvelous Spring!  With all the crazy weather behind us, we are now enjoying Mother Nature's palette of color, and what better place to appreciate it than on the golf course.  Lush green fairways are beckoning to all golfers and even if we're having a less than glorious round, just being out on the golf course these days is enough to bring some degree of contentment to us all.

You see I didn't always feel this way.  I practically went kicking and screaming onto the first golf course after a series of golf lessons – a present from my husband- many, many years ago.  After we let three groups go ahead of us (I was too self-conscious), my husband's patience was wearing thin.  We played.  Finally.  No, I didn't enjoy that first round.  No it wasn't relaxing.  Thoughts ran rampant in my head:  With two small children and a full time job, who has time to play golf!

I tried a few more rounds before putting my sticks up for about 20 years.  Pulling them out again, kids almost grown now, I took some refresher lessons so that I could begin to play with an after work league at my workplace.  I needed that practice, too, to be able to get back onto the course with Mr. Wonderful without embarrassing either of us and to let him know that now I was serious about trying this mar-r-velous game again.

Apparently it worked.  This month he and I will be celebrating our 50th year of marriage.  I still can't come close to beating this man (although I may luck out on a hole or two) but I can and do enjoy the time we spend on the golf course together.

Next, I needed to find a group of women with whom to play golf so that I could go out and play without having to wait on my husband to fit a game into his schedule.  In came SAWGA.

It took awhile to get my first 20 rounds, and look at me now.  I still struggle in a accomplishing a goal to get my handicap down, I've enjoyed making new golfing friends, and I have been deeply involved with the organization.  However, now it's time to give someone else a chance

We've got a great slate of officers ready in the wings.  Let's give them our wholehearted backing with the start of a new golfing year.

Thank you all for the support you gave me these past two years and for the support you continue to give golf.

I'll see you on the links!
