President's Message

"Everyone’s A Winner!"

Well, shame on you if you missed this one. Because of a glitch in the set-up of our Spring’s End of the Season Tournament set at Canyon Springs Golf Club, and because of some quick thinking by our tournament co-chairs, Nancy White and PJ Wright, everyone won gift certificates. Some, of course had bragging rights as posted on the board, but all twenty-three who played on May 11 won because the format had been improperly set up by someone other than our tournament chairs.

We welcome some newly elected members to the SAWGA board and say farewell to a few who have stepped down. Syd Muenster is a well-qualified member, having served in other capacities for SAWGA in the past. She is now second vice-president and is responsible for membership and directory information. Welcome, Syd! She replaces Gayle Fisk who has done yeoman duty in trying to serve not only as second vice-president, but also in an even greater capacity, that of weekly tournament chair. Gayle will remain as tournament chair. Thank you, Gayle.

Susan Powell is stepping down as Historian and will be replaced by Wendy Molnar. Susan served as eyes and ears for anything that could be considered history in the works. Thank you, Susan. Wendy is fairly new to SAWGA, but has dug right in to volunteering as this committee chair.

Carol Buss, long our Sunshine Gal, is stepping down after serving in this capacity as well as several others in the past. Sunbeams to you, Carol. Karen Antis, already a board member, presently serving as parliamentarian, will just be changing hats, remaining on the board by taking on a new role as the Sunshine person.

Terry Lambert stepped up to the plate to take over the communications chair when Grace Walker resigned earlier this year. Thank you, Terry, for constantly improving our website and keeping us informed of golfing tournaments throughout our area. He continues to work at bringing us into the age of technology, and we may, by September, be able to sign up for tournaments online.

Not to be forgotten are each of the other board members who have served so faithfully this past year. Each of you has done a magnificent job, and I cannot thank you enough. It is great to be able to say, “Here, this is what we need from you”, then come back later, confident in knowing that the job was not only done, but done well. Members of the board have tried to listen to concerns of our members and to bring those concerns to our attention at board meetings. It is through your ideas and suggestions that we continue to improve and change this golf group.

SAWGA is no longer the golfing organization that was first formed in 1932, and we wouldn’t have it any other way! Cell phones, e-mail, website newsletters, and e-elections - none of these words were in one’s vocabulary at that time. At least we still have some familiar words like drive, putt, chip, and maybe time-tested words that come forth when others such as rough, chili-dip, slice, and hook make their presence known. After all, some things never change, do they? But, as the ad says, “We’ve come a long way, Baby”, and we’ll make it an even better way, Baby, with your help, your suggestions, your support, and your golf.

Till we see you in September, hit ‘em well.

President 2008-2009
