When a golf pro once asked in the course
of conversation during a lesson, “Who do you plan to play with?” my
reply, “SAWGA”, brought a hesitation, uplifted brows, and a sigh
with the response, “Whew, that’s a tough group!” Our continuing
discussion led me to know that SAWGA was exactly what I was looking
for.
I joined to meet other women who
enjoyed playing golf, but to also meet women who were more serious
about the game, who knew more than I did about the game. I wanted to
hone my game and now knew the SAWGA group and the SAWGA reputation
was what I sought.
SAWGA gives us the opportunity to
meet golfers from other golfing associations and to play different
courses. It is a network of low handicappers, high handicappers and
everything in between. It affords us a broad range of golfers and
golfing experiences.
With the fun and opportunity however,
also comes responsibility. We each must do our part in running the
organization. Several of our members have held various board
positions over the years, but we need to call on others who have
been members but have not held office. You may be new to the
organization and feel uneasy about stepping forward, but hey! Now’s
the time to get out from under that bushel, and let us see your
light! Every one of you has a talent that can be utilized by SAWGA.
Step forward and volunteer to participate on the board.
Elections for next year’s officers
are just around the corner. We’ll be looking for fresh faces to help
run the organization this coming year. Peggy Baker, our first vice
president in charge of recruiting those new faces may be tapping you
to fill Gayle Fisk’s place as second vice president. The second vp
is in charge of membership and directory information. This position
gives you the perfect opportunity to learn of each and every member
within the group. You may not meet them face to face but you will
become familiar with their names. |
We have vacancies to fill on our special
committees, too: PJ Wright is stepping down as Social Tournament
Chair. Carole Buss will also be giving someone else the opportunity
to be our Sunshine/Telephone person, and Susan Powell is stepping
down as Historian.
Want to learn how to run a
tournament? Now’s the time to step forward. PJ is not leaving us
forever; she’s just stepping aside to let someone else have the
chance to bring out those organizational skills. PJ will continue to
be a resource and a mentor for us.
Do you have your ear to the ground
and keep up with friends or members who can use a kind word or a
thoughtful card? Then you fill the bill as Sunshine Person. Carole
has spent several years as our ray of sunshine. Here is the perfect
opportunity for you to step in and take over for her.
Are you a history buff? Wonder about
SAWGA’s roots? Want to preserve SAWGA’s archives? Becoming our
Historian will suit you. Now days it’s more pictorial preservation
of events that happen in SAWGA’s lifetime that you will help
maintain if you choose to volunteer to be our Historian. You
remember seeing Susan Powell walking with camera in hand. That’s
what she was doing, preserving moments of SAWGA’s happenings.
Someone once said, “But we just want
to play golf”. Our organization gives each of us that opportunity,
but we need you to help afford all of us that opportunity. Join the
rest of SAWGA’s board to help preserve this chance to match your
game against others and to forge new and lasting friendships in the
process.
Hit ’em well!
