"Slow Suzie?"

In discussing slow play last month, a request was made of you, Fellow Golfers, to let your president know of any other time saving tips to keep all of us rolling along a bit faster on the course. Both Mary Lucas and Derb Westhoven submitted the same hint that all of us know about but don’t always remember to do: After hitting the ball, immediately hop back into the cart, club in hand, and move on. When you next get to a ball (yours or your cart partner’s), then hop out, clean your club head, and place the club in your bag.

This tip is energy efficient and a time saver. You replace a club and get your next one out at the same time. How easy is that! And, a few more minutes are shaved off your round.

We all have a certain pace, a certain tempo that we’re most comfortable with, but we need to be aware of those around us, too, and occasionally need to adjust that pace in order to make the game relaxing and enjoyable for all.

This brings us to one other consideration we all might reflect on. If we could name five golfers as “Slow Suzies” would your name appear on any list? Every one of us knows a handful of golfers in our organization who might be labeled as slow players. The problem is the Slow Suzies never really see themselves. How do we diplomatically help them speed up? If you have answers please share them with all of us.

Golf is supposed to be relaxing and fun for those of us who aspire to nothing more than the enjoyment and camaraderie of fellow golfers, the great outdoors, and occasional rounds of brilliance that make us certain we’re headed toward the professional circuit. For you scratch golfers and low handicappers just ignore these tidbits. For the rest of us, let’s look around and observe where we stand on these points of play.

Hit ‘em well!

Jeanne Parsley
President 2008-2009
