"Tournaments, Rules, and Etiquette, Oh My"

April! Our official golf year is almost over, but the number of golf tournaments all around the city is just picking up. And not to be left out among those tournaments is SAWGA. We just completed our First Annual Championship Tournament, organized by a most worthy and capable threesome: Nancy White, PJ Wright, and Mary Lucas.

A field of 31 players enjoyed some fierce challenges out at Canyon Springs, especially in the First Flight. It was Colleen Sample who came out on top there and overall as Gross Champion. Colleen is new to SAWGA but certainly not to golf. She carried a handicap of three into this competition and had others hot on her heels. Our overall net champion hailed from the Third Flight. Kathy Arbuthnot really led the pack there. Check out all the winners by going to the March 2009 area on this website.

As we play, we continue to learn more procedures and etiquette. Correct terms are important as well, and here we are reminded of a few:

Hole placement not pin placement
Bunker not sand trap
Flagstick not pin
Teeing area not tee box
Practice range not driving range

Yes, we all are guilty of using the “nots” because we hear them so frequently, but with knowledge and with practice we can help others to hear the correct terms.

Remember, too, if you hole out first on the hole, you get a special responsibility: that of replacing the flagstick after all have putted out.

And Mulligans? No such creature unless perhaps in a charity tournament when you “buy” a few or if you are playing a social round of golf with a group of friends outside SAWGA, and then only if your group feels charitable towards you.

How about a “gimme putt”? Nope, you must putt it out even if it’s one inch from the hole. We have to hear that melodious sound of ball rattling around in the hole.

Adhering to the rules and following proper etiquette in SAWGA helps each of us when we are invited to play in tournaments outside our association. A well-informed golfer means better play for all and reflects well on each of us.

Hit ‘em well and with good manners!
